Stadler’s EURO6000 electric locomotive has been approved for operation in Belgium, extending its authorised network along the North Sea–Mediterranean freight corridor.

The six-axle electric locomotive has a power output of 6 MW and can haul freight trains weighing more than 2,000 tonnes over demanding gradients using a single locomotive.

Approval for Belgium follows authorisation in Luxembourg at the end of 2025. Stadler said the expanded operating area enables uninterrupted freight services between Barcelona and Antwerp, covering Spain, France, Luxembourg and Belgium.

More than 100 EURO6000 locomotives are already in service, including on international freight routes between France and Spain.

According to Stadler, the EURO6000 is currently the only locomotive operating along the full North Sea–Mediterranean Corridor, one of the main TEN-T freight axes connecting southern and northern Europe.

“The authorisation in Belgium and Luxembourg opens new opportunities for rail freight operators seeking sustainable and competitive cross-border transport solutions,” said Iñigo Parra, Executive Vice President of Stadler’s Spain division.

The multi-system locomotive was developed for cross-border freight operations, combining high tractive effort with the ability to operate at commercial speeds on routes with steep gradients.
