This will present certain challenges to mobility and transport in the Salzburg province in the short term. However, Salzburg will undoubtedly benefit greatly from the improved infrastructure in Germany in the long term.
Transition phase to modern infrastructure
Salzburg's status as a significant railway hub, serving domestic and international rail traffic, has exposed it to the challenges posed by the outdated nature of southern Germany's rail infrastructure. Restrictions on rail routes in the neighbouring country have repeatedly led to delays and short-term diversions. It is important to note that the various short-term disruptions at the Deutsches Eck have a considerable negative effect on the quality of long-distance transport in Austria. The major corridor renovations in 2026 and 2027 are intended to resolve these issues and ensure that Germany's rail infrastructure is modern and efficient, with long-term benefits for Salzburg.
Andreas Matthä, CEO of ÖBB Holding AG, provides the following explanation: "In the coming years, our neighbouring country will be investing significantly in rail. This is a positive and significant step for the long-term enhancement of rail transport quality. However, the impact of these investments will be directly experienced by the community in the form of construction sites and traffic restrictions. This will have a significant impact on freight and passenger transport in Austria. We are working tirelessly to ensure the continued provision of transport services in Austria and the security of supply for domestic industry."
Strengthening local transport
With the commencement of track renovations and the resulting track closures in Bavaria, a phase will begin next year that will have an impact on Salzburg. The objective is to ensure the continued mobility of commuters, travellers and the economy in Salzburg.
In an effort to manage the disruption to traffic caused by the construction work, the local rail infrastructure, particularly in the Flachgau region, will be operating at full capacity on a 24/7 basis. Due to the double-track line's inability to meet demand, restrictions will be implemented. ÖBB and WESTbahn have announced a joint initiative to waive 18 long-distance routes between Salzburg and Linz and Wels. By doing so, they are supporting local transport for the benefit of commuters in Salzburg.
Security of supply and opportunity for Salzburg's industry
In order to guarantee the reliability of rail transport for industry during the construction phases, the supply of Salzburg's industrial companies will be ensured. Furthermore, the renovation of the railway lines in Germany represents a significant opportunity for the domestic economy. Companies such as the Salzburg-based Leube Group, a manufacturer of noise protection systems, concrete components and concrete sleepers, are well-positioned to capitalise on this potential.
