Adif has put the expanded intermodal freight terminal at Noáin in Navarra into service after works carried out by Terminal Catalunya, the operating company owned by Hutchison Ports.
The project added two mixed-gauge tracks, each 600 m long and extendable to 750 m, and a 34,000 m² slab for rail operations and container storage. The ends of both tracks have been electrified for the delivery and collection of wagons.
The upgraded facilities quadruple the terminal’s operational capacity. The terminal can handle up to eight trains per day and has a maximum intermodal capacity of 60,000 ITUs per year, compared with 13,710 ITUs handled in 2025.
Terminal Catalunya invested almost EUR 10m in the works under the lease agreement signed with Adif in 2024. The operating concession was awarded for EUR 5.93m and an initial 15-year term starting on 1 July 2025.
Following the investment by Tercat, the contract will be extended by five years, running until 30 June 2045. The works are intended to increase terminal activity and intermodal rail freight capacity in Navarra.
The Noáin Freight Transport Terminal has a total area of 238,000 m² and is part of the Atlantic Corridor on the TEN-T network. The site also includes more than 50,000 m² of commercial space for logistics activities and areas for heavy vehicle parking.
Adif said the terminal is prepared for intermodal train handling and future Rail Freight services.
